Comments from the Judges
At each day’s award ceremony we received comments from the judges for all competition participants. We will share a summary of these comments here, such as advice for further improvements, and praise for the participants’ hard work, which are intended not only for the finalists but for all YEC participants.
<General Comments>
- Going forward, we’d like you all to think about what it means to produce a ‘performance that resonates with the listener’.
- You will not get through to your audience by just playing loudly. We want you to think about appropriate volume levels when performing.
- The Electone allows you to play popular pieces that are not often heard in live performance, making it an instrument that spreads the wonder of music to society. We want you to spread this wonder to the world.
- When preparing for classical performances, we recommend studying contrapuntal pieces, such as Bach’s Two-Part Inventions.
- We want performances where we can feel the groove of the performer themselves, not ones where the drumbeat is the only thing that stands out. This will allow you to truly express the magic of rhythm and phrasing.
- For the motif improvisation section at the finalist qualifying competition (Regional Stage), we want you to not only consider it as compulsory to the competition (in style and in length), but also realize that enjoying it for its own sake will help you improve.
- Think carefully about what instrumentation and style you are playing in, along with your pan and reverb settings.
- Along with high-quality reproductions of existing music and acoustic instrumentation, it would be great to see contestants challenge themselves with new sounds and styles.
Day 1: Junior Age Group 2 and Junior Age Group 3
<Performance Techniques>
- We were pleasantly surprised by the high level of performances. It was particularly impressive to see that many junior high students had established their own styles.
- We look for performances that build upon on the background of the music played, such as registration and sound settings that are conscious of instrumentation and situation.
- Studying the effects of acoustic performance will further enrich your musical expression.
- We want to feel more expression when it comes to your sense of phrasing and breathing. From pianissimo to fortissimo, we want to feel the breadth in dynamics with regards to your instrumentation.
<Compulsory Performance>
- Choosing timbre and determining performance articulation are linked. It is important to be aware of how you are articulating your phrases based on the timbre and tempo you chose.
- Some performances would have seen richer expression through a more careful reading of the score.
Day 2: Junior Age Group 1 and Senior Group
<Junior Age Group 1>
- The level of technical competence was higher than last year, and we could really feel the skill in the arrangements.
- Even in forte sections it’s important to accompany a strong touch with a light one to express the rhythm of melodies and phrases.
- We hope you’ll all expand your horizons by experiencing a range of music and aiming for self-expression through your performance.
<Senior Group>
- The best feature of the Electone is its diversity, and you all delivered stunning performances. We want you to have confidence in your abilities and continue performing.
- (Compulsory Arranged Piece) Rather that adding all the elements you can think of, we’d like to see you produce a persuasive four-minute composition by carefully selecting elements, using neither too many nor too few.
- (Original Piece) It’s important to leave your audience with a clear impression of your performance after it has finished, even if it is just through one impressive melody or phrase. To achieve this, it is necessary to introduce a degree of repetition or devise a recurring theme, rather than shifting the scene as soon as a theme begins.
